FluteSpiration Quartet is a professional flute ensemble dedicated to high quality chamber music performances for all types of audiences. With an exciting synergy of sound, FluteSpiration presents innovative programs for concerts and for community and educational events. We perform in a variety of settings reaching out to audiences of all ages using all members of the flute family: piccolo, c flute, wooden flute, alto flute, and bass flute. Drawing from repertoire covering a rich diversity of styles—Classic masters (including Mozart, Bach, Beethoven), French virtuosic literature (including Debussy and Rameau), Opera selections, popular music, Irish/Celtic favorites, Latin dances, Sacred, Ragtime, Jazz, Holiday—our programming offers something for everyone for every occasion.
Equally at home on the concert stage, the four flutists of FluteSpiration bring a wealth of noteworthy experience to the ensemble. As orchestral players, free-lance performers, recital soloists and chamber musicians, these four talented flutists have performed a variety of styles from Broadway shows to Requiem Masses, locally and as far south as Venezuela, and in settings from the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. With a strong desire to “pay it forward” with the next generation of flutists, they have influenced the lives of hundreds of music students while sharing their expertise as instructors at educational institutions throughout the Upper Midwest.
Performances:
Since our formation in 2011, FluteSpiration Quartet has presented annual benefit concerts for Habitat for Humanity at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Minneapolis and also raised funds for the KidPack program as part of the Fridays in the Valley Music Series at Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Golden Valley. The Quartet has been featured in Faculty Artist Recital Series at Crown College in Waconia and Augsburg University in Minneapolis. FluteSpiration Quartet was invited to present concerts for the Music at Wayzata Series in 2015 and 2016. They were also featured on a Wayzata Community Church Summer Organ Series concert in July of 2015. FluteSpiration has performed multiple years for the Upper Midwest Flute Association's (UMFA) "Flute Choir Showcase" and Flute Fest. They gave a spirited educational presentation for young instrumentalists at Twin Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake. The National Flute Association chose FluteSpiration as a winning ensemble to perform at the 2017 National Convention. Individual Biographies
Trudi Anderson wanted to play the flute before she was big enough to hold the instrument. She started studying privately at age 7, long before the Suzuki method with its emphasis on early childhood musicianship was a part of our musical culture. Fifteen years later, she graduated from Augsburg College with a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance, eventually continuing her studies at the State University of New York at Stoneybrook under the tutelage of Samuel Baron and later earning her Master’s degree in Flute Performance from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she studied with Walfrid Kujala.
Early notable musical experiences were playing in the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, which presented concerts in riverside parks in the Pittsburg area from a barge that had been refurbished as a floating concert stage, and serving as Principal Flute in La Orquesta Filarmonica de Merida (Venezuela). Closer to home and more recently, she has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the St. Cloud Symphony, and the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra, as well as in the pit orchestra for the Guthrie Theatre. She has been a featured concerto soloist with several local orchestra groups and in Wisconsin and Venezuela.
Her preferred performance genre, though, is chamber music. She performs regularly as a member of the Riverside Winds, a woodwind quintet affiliated with Augsburg University; the quintet was recently an MPR Class Notes Artist ensemble performing concerts in local elementary and middle schools. She is a founding member of FluteSpiration, a flute quartet near and dear to her heart that has played in a wide variety of venues since its origin in 2011. Ms. Anderson can also be heard on a highly acclaimed CD of chamber music written by the late local composer Eric Stokes.
She has held faculty positions at the College of St Catherine, the College of St Benedict, Crown College, and MacPhail Center for Music, and is currently teaching flute at Augsburg University (where she also directs the flute ensemble and helps teach the Woodwind Pedagogy class) and Bethel University, along with maintaining a home studio. Many of her students have won contests and auditions and have gone on to become colleagues.
Ms. Anderson served as Vice President and then two terms as President of the Upper Midwest Flute Association, a position she held immediately preceding the hosting of the National Flute Association’s annual convention in Minneapolis. She is a published arranger of music for flute ensemble (ScoreVivo.com).
When not busy with flute-related projects, she gives back to her community by delivering Meals on Wheels and serves on the Board of Directors for the Joyce Uptown Food Shelf. She and her husband are the parents of three adult sons and are pleased to now have added a lovely daughter-in-law and two wonderful grandchildren to their family.
Mark Brudevold's first exposure to music came at his mother's piano, where he learned to read notes and play from John Thompson's beginning piano books mornings before school. Next Mark tried his Grandfather's very old trumpet. Having little success at this, he ventured out to try a few other instruments. Mark was quickly drawn to the flute and never looked back.
Fast forward a few years as Mark began private lessons and practiced diligently. His enthusiasm led to amazing opportunities in the MN All-State Band and Orchestra, Minnesota Youth Symphonies, St. Olaf summer camp, and University of Minnesota honor band. Mark concluded his high school years with a solo flute recital and was chosen to perform the Chaminade Flute Concerto with the St. Paul Central school band.
When the time came to select a career path, Mark was torn between music and engineering, among other exciting pursuits. Thinking through his options carefully, Mark grabbed at both halves of the wishbone. Engineering would be his profession, but music his passion. Mark joined the Campus Orchestra at the University of Minnesota while enrolling in Electrical Engineering and continues to study with retired U of MN flute professor Elaine Eagle.
Mark loves to explore the tone and colors the flute can make. Not satisfied with playing any one particular flute, Mark has amassed an entire family: gold flute, silver flute, wooden flute, piccolo, and alto flute. He plays them all regularly and they are all his favorite.
Active within the musical community, Mark is a member of FluteSpiration Quartet, Thursday Musical, Exultate Chamber Orchestra and Choir, and Upper Midwest Flute Association (UMFA). He plays frequently for services and with the flute choir at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saint Paul. Mark has performed twice as a soloist for the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra concerto competition, UMFA master class with Adam Kuenzel, several private recitals, and yearly at the UMFA marathon concert. Overall, Mark enjoys sharing the endless complexion and beauty of sound spun into inspiring music.
